MANCHESTER UNITED will prioritise signing Gareth Bale over Cristiano Ronaldo this summer, reports claim.
United are in the market for big-name recruits as they look to build a squad capable of going toe-to-toe with Manchester City next season.
And they were put on red alert after the Champions League final when both Gareth Bale and Ronaldo suggested they could quit Real Madrid.
Bale and Ronaldo have been linked with returns to the Premier League over the past few years and their dual admissions led to claims Old Trafford chiefs could swoop for them.
The Manchester Evening News say United have decided to go after Bale rather than Ronaldo ahead of the 2018/19 campaign though.
But that will not matter to Mourinho, who sees the Welshman as the ideal solution to the problematic right wing berth.
Woodward’s peers at boardroom level would probably be won over by the commercial value signing Bale would have for United.
Cristiano Ronaldo, though, faces having to look elsewhere if he is to leave Real, which appears increasingly likely.
The Manchester Evening News indicate Mourinho is not interested in buying the 33-year-old to compete with Romelu Lukaku for a start up front.
Woodward, meanwhile, showed he is willing to resist the temptation to pursue a deal for Ronaldo last summer.
United are said to be monitoring Chelsea wideman Willian as well as their transfer plans play out.
However, a reunion between Mourinho and Willian is improbable if United manage to snare Bale, who’s relented on his desire to stay in Spain.
Chelsea and Tottenham may rival United if Bale comes on the market but would be unlikely to match his anticipated salary demands.
