And according to the Daily Mail, Abramovich may now turn his attention to former head coach Grant.
The 63-year-old managed Chelsea between 2007 and 2008 before taking over at Portsmouth.
And according to the Daily Mail, Abramovich knows he can turn to Grant, who helped guide Chelsea to the Champions League final during his year in charge.
The Isreali would be ready to return to the club straight away, despite currently being in charge of Indian Super League club NorthEast United FC.
Meanwhile, Laurent Blanc has also emerged as a front-runner for the role.
The former PSG boss has been out of work for two years since leaving the Ligue 1 outfit.
However, no decision is expected to be made over the new arrival until director Marina Granovskaia returns from a holiday next week.
As for Abramovich, the Russian billionaire is currently attempting to resolve VISA problems which saw him miss the club's FA Cup final win over Manchester United.
